Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about seeing a Psychologist for the first time:

What does psychological treatment involve?

You can expect to see a trained and experienced psychologist. The first session is one an hour and twenty minutes and involves a thorough and detailed assessment in order to get a better understanding of your concerns. I will then provide you with feedback and discuss possible treatment options which may include ongoing sessions or referral options for a more appropriate service if required.

Sessions are practical, covering a wide range of evidence based skills and strategies to help meet goals and reduce symptoms that are getting in the way. Sessions usually begin with a quick check in on symptoms and then the agenda for the session is set by you and your psychologist depending on goals, issues that arise or sometimes immediate needs and priorities given whatever is happening in your life at the time.

What are the benefits of treatment?

Evidence based psychological treatment is found to be helpful in the management of mental health symptoms. Encouragingly, there is hope. When you see a psychologist who is trained and evidence based in their approach, it is likely that you will experience improvement over time, with skill practice and gentle kind patience.

What does online therapy involve?

Online therapy is a rapidly growing alternative to face-to-face therapy. Online therapy is in high demand due to it's convenience and accessibility. Even more now with COVID-19. There is no need to travel to an appointment, deal with traffic or parking, and can be done from the comfort of your own home. Some people prefer to do sessions online from the outset, others may have online sessions while they are away interstate or overseas for some time.

Can I get a Rebate?

Yes. Rebates for sessions are available both face to face and online. If you get a Mental Health Care Plan or are eligible for rebates from a private health fund, then some of the cost of the session will be rebated to you. To get a Mental Health Care Plan, you would need to visit your GP, Pediatrician or Psychiatrist.

Who is not appropriate for psychological treatment at a private practice?

Currently, Ivone Rebelo offers appointments to children and adults of all ages.

However, therapy is not always appropriate for anyone who is currently self harming or is at risk of suicide. At such a difficult time there is hope, and support is available:
